BALTIMORE (AP) The Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox will play their first game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in 2021.
And for the first time, the Orioles will host a game at Camden in 2020, when they will be a member of the National League West.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter will get a chance to showcase his team’s new ballpark to fans who want to see the Orioles compete for a playoff spot in 2021 and 2022.
The Orioles and Red Sox are among five NL West teams to open 2021 with at least one new ballpark in 2020.
Baltimore has been the only NL West team to open with a new ballpark, but the Orioles also will host games at Camden.
The O’s opened at Camden with a game in 2021, and they have been the home of the Orioles since 2012.
Baltimore opened with a ballpark in 2012 and has played three games there in 2021 as well as 2022.
Camden Yards was named a Major League Baseball Stadium of the Year in 2017.
The stadium was a $1.2 billion project with about 2,500 seats.
In 2021, the Baltimore Orioles were the only Major League team to have two or more home games at the new stadium.
They were also the only team to play a season opener in 2021 with a different stadium than the one in 2021 for the season opener.
The new stadium is in the middle of the Camden Yards National Historic District and features a view of the stadium’s roof and parking lot.
The Red Sox also have home games in the new ballpark at Fenway Park.
The two teams will play the first game of the 2021 season at Camden on Sept. 16.
The 2017 season is the Orioles’ last at the old Camden Yards, and it is the last year of a 10-year contract that includes a club option for 2022.
In 2019, the team was given a 20-year, $1 billion contract extension that was worth $1 million per season.
The team is expected to play at Camden for another four seasons.
Baltimore and Boston have a strong rivalry dating to the 1970s and 1980s, and the two teams have played each other at Fenland Park in Boston and Camden Yards for a dozen seasons.
Orioles owner Peter Angelos and Boston owner Paul DePodesta are close, and Angelos owns a stake in the Orioles.
The teams are both expected to win a World Series this year.
Orioles outfielder Ryan Flaherty is also scheduled to pitch for the Red Sox on Sept 2, but it is unclear whether he will pitch for Baltimore or Boston.
